  72. a collection of software that gives you convenient access to your
  73. printer's features when used in the Microsoft Windows 3.1 
  74. environment.

  79. FEATURES OF THE HP LASERJET 4L PRINTING SYSTEM FOR MICROSOFT 
  80. WINDOWS 3.1

  84. The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 
  85. version 31.V1.00 provides the following new features:
  86.  
  87. Automatic Setup.
  88.  
  89.     The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1
  90.     provides its own automatic setup program.  It is NOT 
  91.     necessary to install this printing system through the 
  92.     Control Panel.  Setup instructions are detailed in this 
  93.     README file.

  95. Graphical Status Window.
  96.  
  97.     The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1
  98.     Status Window graphically displays printing status and error
  99.     information about the printer on the PC screen.  A small 
  100.     Window pops up automatically when a job is printed and 
  101.     displays an image of the printer as well as the name of the
  102.     print job and the current time.  If an error occurs during the
  103.     print job, information is provided in the Status Window 
  104.     regarding the error.  In addition, condition-specific Help
  105.     information can be accessed by pressing F1 or choosing the 
  106.     Help option on the Status Window menu.

  108.     The HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 
  109.     Bi-Tronics I/O communication driver for the PC and printer
  110.     parallel port allows bi-directional communication to the PC
  111.     in order to provide status and error information to be 
  112.     displayed by the Status Window.    
  113.   
  114. Support for Sound.
  115.  
  116.     The Microsoft Windows 3.1 Sound driver for the PC speaker as 
  117.     well as several sound files are provided with the HP LaserJet
  118.     4L Printing System.  This sound driver utilizes the audio
  119.     speaker of the PC to communicate printer conditions verbally
  120.     in conjunction with the Status Window.

  122. Updated Version of Microsoft Print Manager for Windows 3.1.
  123.  
  124.     This updated version of the Print Manager provides an expanded
  125.     Tool Bar from which you can pause and resume print queues as
  126.     well as pause, resume, re-order, and delete individual print
  127.     jobs.  Additionally, a new Information button is provided 
  128.     which when pressed activates the HP LaserJet 4L Status Window.
  129.     The Print Manager must be enabled and activated for proper 
  130.     Status Window performance.  The Setup program automatically 
  131.     enables and activates the Windows Print Manager during 
  132.     installation.

  134. Support for Graphics Quality.
  135.  
  136.     The LaserJet 4L Printing System supports 300, 150, and 75 
  137.     dpi. The actual graphics resolution settings are denoted by 
  138.     the descriptive terms of High, Medium, and Low rather than 
  139.     the actual dpi.
  140.  
  141. Support for the internal Intellifont typefaces.
  142.     All the internal Intellifont typefaces in the HP LaserJet 
  143.     4L printer are supported in the 19U symbol set.  To obtain 
  144.     WYSIWYG results, use HP Intellifont which supports on-the-fly
  145.     screen fonts to match your printer fonts in Windows 3.1.

  147. Support for HP-GL/2
  148.     Support for HP-GL/2 is provided in the HP LaserJet 4L Printing
  149.     System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 version 31.V1.00.  Under the 
  150.     Options Dialog in the Printer Setup, an option of "Graphics 
  151.     Mode" is available. Two options are present:  HP-GL/2 or 
  152.     Raster. The first choice enables HP-GL/2 which will increase
  153.     print performance.  The second choice uses raster only.  The 
  154.     default graphics mode is set to raster for the HP LaserJet 4L.  
  155.     
  156. Support for EconoMode  
  157.     Support for EconoMode is provided in the HP LaserJet 4L 
  158.     Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1 version 31.V1.00 
  159.     within the Options Dialog.  There are two options available, 
  160.     On or Off. With EconoMode enabled the output will resemble 
  161.     draft mode, using fewer dots in order to conserve toner.

  163. Support for Print Density 
  164.     Print density support is provided in the Options Dialog. 
  165.     Adjust the density of the printer according to the desired 
  166.     density.  The density range is one (lightest) to five 
  167.     (darkest).

  169. Dialog Support for REt
  170.     Another feature added to the Option Dialog is the REt
  171.     (Resolution Enhancement technology) box.  The options here
  172.     are Light, Medium, Dark, and Off.

  181. To use the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows
  182. 3.1, you must have the following:

  184.     - An HP LaserJet 4L printer
  185.  
  186.     - DOS version 3.31 or later
  187.  
  188.     - Microsoft Windows 3.1 or later
  189.  
  190.     - An IBM-compatible 286 computer, or faster
  191.  
  192.     - A high-density floppy disk drive 
  193.  
  194.     - 2 MBytes RAM (4 MBytes recommended for satisfactory Windows
  195.       performance)
  196.  
  197.     - A VGA-compatible (or higher resolution) monitor
  198.  
  199.     - 1.75 MBytes of hard disk space available to install the 
  200.       components of the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for 
  201.       Microsoft Windows 3.1.
  202.  
  203. NOTE:  Most devices connected between the HP LaserJet 4L printer 
  204.     and the host computer prevent the printer from sending data 
  205.     back to the computer.  Therefore, the Status Window will not 
  206.     operate with HP LaserJet 4L printers on networks, the HP 
  207.     LaserJet Fax, most hardware print spoolers, some software 
  208.     print spoolers, and some switch boxes.

  213. INSTALLATION INSTRUCTIONS

  217. To install the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft 
  218. Windows 3.1 version 31.V1.00:
  219.  
  220. NOTE:  If you intend to use HP Intellifont for Windows to
  221.     produce screen fonts for the Intellifont typefaces in the
  222.     HP LaserJet 4L, you must install Intellifont for Windows 
  223.     BEFORE installing the printing system. Please refer to 
  224.     the Intellifont for Windows instructions.
  225.  
  226. 1.  Start Microsoft Windows.
  227.  
  228. 2.  Insert the HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft 
  229.     Windows 3.1 Setup disk into a high-density 3.5" floppy disk
  230.     drive (usually A or B).
  231.  
  232. 3.  From the Windows Program Manager select the File menu.
  233.  
  234. 4.  Choose RUN.
  235.  
  236. 5.  Type A:\SETUP (or B:\SETUP) and press ENTER.
  237.  
  238. 6.  Follow the instructions on the computer screen.
  239.

  241. NOTE:  Once you have installed the HP LaserJet 4L Printing 
  242.     System for Microsoft Windows 3.1, if an older Hewlett-Packard
  243.     printer driver installation for the LaserJet 4 family is 
  244.     later attempted, Windows will prompt the user with the 
  245.     following message:
  246.  
  247.         "The currently installed HPPCL5E.DRV is newer...
  248.         than the one you are attempting to install.  Do
  249.         you still want to install the file?"
  250.      
  251.     Select CANCEL for this dialog.  If NO is selected, there is 
  252.     the possibility of damaging critical files needed for the 
  253.     HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1.  
  254.     Do not select YES unless the older driver is desired. 
  255.     A more recent driver for your particular printer can be
  256.     obtained by calling HP Driver Distribution at (303)353-7650
  257.     in the USA and Canada or through your authorized HP dealer 
  258.     in other countries.

  260. NOTE:  In the event that you would like to deinstall the HP 
  261.     LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1, the
  262.     following instructions provide that ability:
  263.  
  264.     1.  From the Windows Program Manager select the File menu.
  265.  
  266.     2.  Choose RUN.
  267.  
  268.     3.  Type C:\WINDOWS\DINSTALL -FDINSTALL.INS
  269.  
  270.     4.  You will be prompted to ensure that the HP LaserJet 4L
  271.         Printing System is to be deinstalled.
  272.  
  273.     This deinstallation will only disable the Status Window of 
  274.     HP LaserJet 4L Printing System for Microsoft Windows 3.1.
  275.     The updated Print Manager and printer driver will remain
  276.     operable.
